Discover a unique site in the heart of the Dordogne

Clinging to the side of the protective rock, La Maison Forte de Reignac is a castle-cliff that today inspires far more serenity than concern. Its ochre-coloured stones are bathed in sunlight and the waters of the Vézère river, in the heart of the Vallée de l’Homme. In this mineral setting, where the surrounding area has gradually become covered with tall trees, the centuries have not been able to erase the legacy of our prehistoric ancestors. From the dawn of time to the Lords of Reignac, the site has preserved the testimony of History.

Visit the exhibition on torture and the death penalty

In a dedicated room off the tour route, you can view an international exhibition on torture, the Inquisition and the death penalty. The macabre sophistication of this era is illustrated through tools, machines and archival texts. Far from being a sordid display, it’s a duty of remembrance and a warning against acts of barbarism that are still in use around the world today!

One of the best visits in the region!

As soon as we arrived, we were impressed by the facade of this fortified house built into the rock.
The visit is very interesting, with a small museum on prehistory, then the various well-decorated rooms (note the lit fires in the fireplaces) and explanatory panels.

Throughout the visit, you’ll gain height, and it’s as pleasurable as it is impressive to be able to stroll through the rock so close to the void.

The end of the visit is dedicated to an exhibition of torture objects, which is chilling to see the human cruelty, and even more so when you know that some of them are still in use…
An unusual troglodytic site not to be missed.

A pleasant discovery!

We had a great time, with all the different points explained and a mix of Stone Age and seigniorial times visited in tandem with the Roque Saint Christophe, which saves us a little money by taking the 2 tickets at the same time, and gives us a better understanding of the Roque Saint Christophe.

Incredible place to visit

An incredible place, a must-see if you’re in the area. The fortified house is beautifully decorated, well-maintained and immersive, with music, fireplaces… we felt transported back in time.

The written explanations are great, and we learned a lot.

Affordable price on top of that. It’s just beautiful. We were just disappointed not to run into Merlin 🙂

Formidable discovery

This Maison Forte is a wonderful discovery. The place is great, superbly decorated and rich in elements. The staff are friendly, smiling and very welcoming.

What’s more, it was decorated for Halloween, and I was amazed at the work that went into the decorations, the attention to detail and the fun puzzles that went right to the end with the magic spell in the cauldron. Just bravo bravo!

Not to be missed!

A stunning building, absolutely superb and unique…

The background music during the tour is just right, giving the impression that the place is still inhabited. My mother and I really wanted to visit this place and we were not disappointed…

The torture chamber is incredible, we stayed there for 1 hour because there are summaries of explanations to read, it was really top notch! Not to be missed if you’re passing through and if you like history, of course.
